The GNU General Public License is a popular free software license which protects the open-source code from commercial appropriation by requiring that anything that uses the code also be placed under a compatible open-source license. For a detailed discussion, see GPL on Wikipedia. The text of the GPL can be obtained from http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.txt'.
